medavis Server Maintenance Tool Extension of the Data Backup Concept

The medavis Server Maintenance Tool extends the data backup concept provided by medavis GmbH. It is not only used for carrying out the daily data backup, but enables flexible configuration of further backup and check-up procedures.

The medavis GmbH Data Security Concept

  The data security concept from medavis is characterised by the fact that further customised backup and verification measures can be set up with the help of the medavis Server Maintenance Tool, in addition to the control measures already provided. The concepts described below therefore refer only to the basic backup.

The security concept is divided into three parts:

• Execution of the data backup (even when system running)
  
  With the data backup, a local copy of the database is first made on the database server. Then the following happens with the copy of the database:

   

  1. It is copied to a second computer in the network. This computer is usually the communication server, but any other computer can also be selected.
     Ideally the computer should be in another room or another building.

      

  2. The copy of the database is written to a backup tape on the database server. The procedure is logged on the server in a protocol.
     The customer himself is responsible for changing the backup tapes.

  Once the backup is complete, a report message is sent to recipients of a mailing list. Depending on the equipment available, the message can be sent either by RIS Mail, email or fax.

   

• Data backup check by the user
  
  As user, you have the option of being informed of the status of the data backup. A differentiation is made between the messages sent, depending on whether the backup was successful or not. You can therefore arrange with medavis GmbH, whether you want to be informed only if the backup failed, or if you want to view the data backup log file regardless.

  Our Service personnel can define error statuses, as the log file is sent to medavis GmbH by email or fax after the data backup. In addition, we regularly carry out database server checks, over and above our contractual commitments.

medavis also recommends you use an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), both for medavis RIS and for the communication server. The UPS makes sure that the server is shut down correctly in the event of a power failure, preventing data loss that would occur if the server crashed.

Range of functions of the medavis Server Maintenance Tool

The medavis Server Maintenance Tool has been designed by medavis to monitor the medavis RIS Server and any other server. The medavis Server Maintenance Tool is available in addition to your medavis RIS Server Software. It offers the following functions:

• Daily backup
• Administrative checks, for example, for memory (check-up)
• Automatic notification of selected medavis RIS users on the progress and status of the data backup executed
• Automatic notification of the medavis Support team of problems occurring on the server. This not only includes whether the data backup has failed, but also, for example, whether the memory available has fallen below a specified percentage of the hard disk.
• Visual and acoustic warning in the case of serious errors
• Option for system-specific addition of further data backup and monitoring measures
